Marking your accomplishments

Everyone measures his or her progress in a different way. Dr. Riskedal has written about the importance of training and pacing when you are planning to run a marathon. Johnna Williams earlier this week encouraged learners (and she is one of them) to think about how much they have accomplished.

The Dissertation: Reflecting on Accomplishments

I like that others are writing about the various metaphors one can associate to their individual programs.  Much like preparing for a marathon, completing a doctoral program poses challenges in the preparation, execution, and completion of your goals.  Since beginning my doctoral journey I have come to value the advice I’ve received over time: that this is a process; its not a race; and that every task that is completed represents progress. A colleague of mine recently passed along a book titled “The Formation of Scholars: Rethinking Doctoral Education for the Twenty-First Century.”  I have only just started reading it, but as I flipped to the Contents page, the chapter on “Creating and Sustaining Intellectual Community” stood out and cried, read me first.

Control your nerves

This is the time of the quarter where learners across Capella’s four schools are about to begin their comprehensive examinations. As I have spoken with dozens of learners in recent weeks, a recurring theme I am hearing is that they are nervous. And, to all of them I say that a little nervousness is usually just fine. READ MORE
