Ask Doctoral Advising

Getting the training in.

Carving out time for self

Running a marathon is a major committment.
Training for and preparing for the actual marathon is a committment.

Committment in Time.  Effort.

It impacts all facets of your life.
Family.
Work.
Personal.

Because, if you are out there running, there is something else you are not doing with that time.

But you will be better off for training well and preparing well for the actual event.

In your doctoral journey, what facets of your life are being impacted?

Clearly, I value the education, the degree, and the effort it takes to accomplish that degree.
Clearly, I value the exercise, the training, and the effort to accomplish that endurance event.

For me to accomplish both, I set aside time for me: time to train, time to reflect on the training and the effort I was putting into my life.

Time to study (train), beyond the courseroom.
Time for family and friends.
Time for my job.
Without compromising my time (i.e. thinking about my coursework while on the job, or spending time with my family)
Its not easy to do. And sometimes work, personal, and family ‘events’ get in the way, and seem to conspire against you.
Thats why you have a coaching helping you through training and why you have an academic advisor and faculty guiding you through the program and the institution.

How are you addressing the family/work/personal issues that impose themselves when you intend to study?
