Welcome to another topic in a series of podcasts regarding aspects of the comprehensive exam and dissertation process.
The difference between graduation and commencement can be confusing. Often times the two terms are used interchangeably, when in fact, they are two very different events. This podcast describes the difference between graduation and commencement and shares the process for each.
First, it is important to know that graduation and commencement are two separate events. Graduation is the process by which Capella University officially confers a degree to a learner. Commencement, on the other hand, is the ceremony which publicly recognizes those learners who have graduated or will soon graduate.
To participate in a commencement ceremony, you must be a degree or certificate learner, have been awarded or approved for graduation, and RSVP’d to attend a ceremony. Ceremonies are held twice a year: in winter and summer quarters. The summer ceremony is always held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, while the winter location moves to different parts of the country. Participation in a commencement ceremony is not required and does not imply or assure degree conferral.
Learners must apply for graduation. Doctoral learners can apply after milestone 8 has been approved. The Records, Processing & Operations Department (or RPO) will audit your transcripts to verify that all academic requirements for your program are met, or will be met upon completion of the dissertation. RPO will e-mail you with your graduation status once the graduation audit is complete. When approved for graduation, you are eligible to attend a commencement ceremony. You will receive an e-mail inviting you to attend an upcoming ceremony.
The commencement ceremony is a profound and moving rite of passage. The ceremony itself encompasses two separate events for doctoral learners: the hooding ceremony and the commencement ceremony. Most importantly, don’t forget to order your regalia!
Specific information about commencement, including deadlines for the graduation application and RSVP-ing for commencement are available on iGuide.
Remember, you bring unique circumstances to your doctoral journey. Follow-up with your doctoral advisor for clarification and additional information about the dissertation process.
