Public Service Leadership in action

From a keynote address by General Colin Powell to virtual crime scenes to key leadership insights, there’s plenty happening at the new School of Public Service Leadership.

One of the goals of the new school is to unite three closely-related fields: Public Safety, Health Care, and Public Administration under one common umbrella.

Because the public service world is changing and evolving before our eyes, it’s great to see our learners, faculty, and alumni taking advantage of the multidisciplinary approach offered at the new school. Here’s a small taste of what’s been happening:

General Colin Powell takes the stage for Capella in Arlington
As part of our Distinguished Speaker Series, Capella will welcome General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.) to our Arlington, Virginia, PhD colloquium. Powell, an American statesman, former United States Secretary of State, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and former Commander in Chief of U.S. Army Forces Command, will present the keynote address on October 24, 2009.

General Powell’s address is part of the ongoing celebration of the new school, which was created to educate future leaders with a multi-disciplinary approach to public service education. Video highlights from General Powell’s address will be available on the Public Service Leadership Web site shortly after the October 24 event.

Watch highlights from David Gergen’s inspiring message of leadership and service
Also recently taking the Capella PhD colloquia stage was noted political analyst, policy advisor, CNN commentator, and best-selling author David Gergen. He brought his leadership expertise to the Phoenix PhD colloquium, speaking on the importance of leadership in public service and the vision required to help raise the collective bar of those around us.

Gergen’s inspirational words about leadership come at a time when Capella’s new School of Public Service Leadership aims to develop public service leaders who can effectively collaborate and solve emerging needs in health care, public safety, and public administration.

For those interested in the hot-button issues facing public safety professionals today, don’t miss Public Safety Signals, a blog featuring a diverse range of Capella learners, faculty, and other professionals’ viewpoints and thoughts. Recent topics have ranged from the H1N1 flu virus to excitement surrounding a visiting Fulbright Scholar, Dr. John Hawkins, at the Atlanta Colloquium in September. With a wide range of perspectives represented, there’s always something interesting to discover.

The authors welcome comments and suggestions from you, and are happy to engage in a dialogue. You might even gain some insight you can bring into the courseroom.

Get the scoop on the real CSI
The world of forensic science isn’t always as simple as TV would have us believe. In fact, it never is. Welcome to the world of Capella PhD learner Laura Pettler, a place where real science meets real sense, as seen in her virtual CSI tour on our Public Service Leadership Web site.

Pettler is in the final stages of earning her PhD in Criminal Justice from Capella University. But it’s her infallible passion for advancing the field of forensic science from the high-budget sets of Hollywood dramas to the fluorescent lights of our countries courtrooms that drives her.

Now that’s public service leadership in action! Pettler is able to take what she learns in the courseroom and apply it directly to her day job as Lead Investigator for Prosecutorial District Twenty A. She is also the Director of the Crime Scene Reconstruction and Behavioral Analysis Program for the district. At night she works to help others develop their forensic and analytical skills as the co-founder of the Richmond Community College International Forensic Institute.

So the next time you see a crime scene on TV, remember: in the real world, it’s a lot more science that sunsets. Laura Pettler proves just that.
