The RFID Security Alliance has posted a call for papers for their RFID Security Workshop in Istanbul this spring. RFID technologies are being used in everything from supply chain management to passports. Security and privacy concerns and failure to develop robust solutions are a challenge for these technologies. If you are looking for a way to contribute to the information security community, RFID security is a worthy place for you to put your time and attention.
What do you think about the state of RFID security and the impact it may have on the use of this technology?

I think that RFID is a good idea for use in industries that dont need high levels of security. A talk at Defcon by Major Malfunction shows just how easy it is to clone a RFID tag and that proves they dont have the encryption needed for private information storage.

I agree that there are very few gates on an RFID chip available for things like encryption. One of the approaches to managing this reality is for scientists to come up with ‘encryption lite’ that will meet the function of typical encryption without taking up so much real estate. This is one area of research that could benefit society since the industry appears determined to move forward regardless of the security and privacy concerns that currently exist.
