This shouldn’t surprise anyone. It would be surprising if it were they weren’t attempting to use it. If people are going to make their personal information available to the world they it’s going to be used by government agents all over the world. If you’re committing crimes on top of that and putting information about yourself on the internet, you’re more valuable than any government informant could ever be.
Am betting these sites present endless ‘stupid criminal’ stories for regulators and law enforcement who leverage these tools
There are countless stupid criminal stories. I read one the other day about a guy who was on the run, I believe he was in the Caribbean, I’ll have to find the link. He was taunting the authorities with pictures and postings of how much fun he was having and how they would not be able to catch him. The authorities were able to use his postings to secure extradition.
For the sake of accurate citations. The individual mentioned is Maxi Sopo, a fugitive on the run for fraud who was hiding out in cancun. You can google his name to find the details of his stupid crime. Huffington Post has a good write up.
It is amazing how willing people are to share personal information via social media sites (pictures, stories, etc.) if it helps Federal Agencies secure criminals then so be it. I feel they should be charged twice; once for the crime and twice for being stupid enough to post information.
I guess this the new technological way of running your mouth ;-0
It doesn’t surprise me at all that the FBI would be using social media for investigations. People are foolish enough to post anything and everything online so why not take advantage of it. Social media is not private and the users should be smart enough to realize that.
