I think with the rise of Foursquare and Facebook places, this is going to get a little worse. I mean this guy posted a picture which gave his where abouts, but I personally had an incident with Google Latitude.
I think that there needs to be more awareness how to turn geolocation on and off in certain apps, but not on in all apps.
I also believe that this is going to increase the rise of thefts, cyberbullying, and assaults.
There are so many things related to security (RFID and other surveillance technologies, the use of triangulation of biometrics controls to track etc) that I would love to make people understand more fully.
Any suggestions in how to make people not only take the time to learn about these risks but also to think about them deeply enough to really understand the implications and how they might apply to their own lives?
Something I have followed closely concerning IAS has always been privacy. I have written at least three papers on privacy since 2003 during my B.S. degree pursuit. I imagine if people understood privacy, this would be a first step in helping them desire to learn more about technologies such as RFID.
However, I am of the personal opinion that privacy is a can of worms. Really, the individual will come to terms the fact that they either have privacy or do not. Defining what privacy means to you will be the most important threshold to cross.
I agree with you that we would all benefit from giving more thought to the privacy implications of our technology choices. It does seem that privacy is perceived differently by younger people than has been the case in the past.
