What am I talking about? I am talking about Bill S.773 that is before the 111th Congress 1st Session – AKA Cybersecurity Act of 2009. This bill was introduced to the Senate by Senator Rockefeller, et al. dated March 31, 2009. According to the “Cybersecurity Act of 2009 as found on OpenCongress.org’s Web site; this is “A bill to ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective Cybersecurity defenses against disruption, and for other purposes. “ (OpenCongress.org, 2009). When adding a traditional hardware based firewall to a network, major network based surgery is needed a majority of the time. The potential for configuration problems with both internal clients and the router/proxy are increased. There is also overhead that goes into processing each packet or session for the firewall, making it difficult to come to an informed decision.
When looking though the eyes of an attacker, only minimal investigation and enumeration is needed to identify a device that is acting as a firewall. Its rule-set or “protection” features can be realized. READ ON

Robert Lemos of CIO.com addresses the benefits that the cloud provides to organizations in terms of not having to invest in basic IT infrastructure. However, he also identifies some important pitfalls that need to be avoided. One pitfall includes the fact that data held by a provider may well be under less stringent discovery rules than data held within the organization. This presents some interesting considerations particularly for those who are collecting and storing regulated information. What are some of the mitigation strategies that you would recommend to those opting to hand over their data to a 3rd party vendor?

According to a recent news article, "Contractor Seeks ‘Cyber Warriors’ to Help Defend U.S." Raytheon is looking for some good security people. An excellent quote in the article states,
"We’re looking for those individuals who understand the inner workings of computer systems and software, who understand the interaction between hardware and software down to the nitty-gritty," he said. "Not people who’ve specialized in high-level computer languages." READ ON
