Methodology Resources

Methodology, I don’t know about you but it is such a challenge for me. I am currently working on the proposal for my dissertation and this past weekend I was struggling with both my research question and what methodology I want to use to answer that question – sound familiar? One of the best ways I found to figure out a methodology I am thinking of using is to look at articles and dissertations that have used the methodology.

When I am searching for articles or dissertations that have a particular methodology, I like to search for my topic and the name of the methodology in the abstract of the article or dissertation. The methodology the researcher used is almost always reported in the abstract.

Here is an example of how to search in the abstract in the Dissertations & Theses Full Text database:

You can also search by school (Capella) and by advisor/mentor in this database.

Usually a detailed description of the Methodolgy is in Chapter 3 of a dissertation or under section labeled “Methodology” in a research article.

Hint: If you are looking for mixed methods studies the word mixed methods frequently does not appear in the abstract. You need to look for a study that has both a qualitative and quantitative component.
