Like a lot of news junkies, I try to skim several newspapers and magazines every day. Many news organizations allow readers free access online, but some still require a subscription. That means a lot of money to spend and passwords to remember.
You can save a bit of time and treasure by using the Capella Library’s newspaper and magazine collections.
The Factiva database (on the Databases A-Z list) has a handy News Pages tab that brings you daily stories from several major U.S. newspapers and business magazines, including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Forbes. You can also change the dropdown from United States to another geographical region or topic heading.

Many popular and trade magazines are in the library databases as well. Using Journal Locator you can quickly get to the most recent issue of the Economist, the Atlantic, Kiplinger’s, Time, the Smithsonian, and many, many more general interest and news magazines. You can even set up a journal alert for your favorite magazines, so you’ll get a list of headlines sent to you directly.
So, when you’ve got a spare moment, you can use the library to quickly check up on the state of the world.

I am a huge fan of Women’s Wear Daily. I have always accessed it through school databases because it is a $99 a year for an electronic subscription or even more for a print one. As a poor student, I can’t justify the expense.

That’s a good point! We get in the habit of pushing the scholarly publications, but sometimes the popular ones are more fun.

A magazine I subscribe to (in print) is The Week. It looks at the best of the best of what is out there and really cuts down on my reading. I won’t be renewing in a few months if I can find it in a database though. We, as students, are helping pay for those databases so why not use them to the fullest extent.
