If you’re heading to the Atlanta colloquium, be sure to attend the library session on your schedule. We’ve received feedback that library sessions are one of the most valuable at colloquia for various reasons.

  • Unaware of all of the resources and services available to you as a Capella learner.
  • Search tricks and techniques can drastically change the relevance and quantity of your results.
  • Get a chance to have your most burning questions answered.
  • Find out librarians are real people, not robots, who are research experts and here to help you learn to become a more efficient researcher.

Nearly every guide mentioned at the library’s colloquia sessions are included in a special section of our Guides & Tutorials page. To get to that section, just follow these steps.

1) From the Library Homepage click Guides & Tutorials.

2) There are several bulleted links at the top of the page that link to different sections. Click Resources for Doctoral Learners to jump to the section that includes the guides you heard about at Colloquia.

3) From here you can select a guide that piqued your interest at the colloquium!

Well cited reference searching is now a feature in the Science Direct – Social and Behavioral Sciences database (located on the Articles, Books and More page along with all the other Library databases).

Science Direct’s cited reference searching works somewhat differently than the other databases, as the “cited by” link is not on the results list but rather a button on the article information page (not the PDF).

So for example when you’re looking at a list of results in Science Direct you would click on the linked Article Title. When you’ve clicked the article title you’ll view a page similar to the below mini screen shot. The Cited By link is to the right of the article title on this page (highlighted in yellow):

Upon clicking on the Cited By link you’ll view the articles in the Science Direct database that cited the original article you were viewing.

We will update the Bibliography Mining & Cited Reference Searching guide to include ProQuest and Science Direct as soon as possible. But for now refer to this blog post and the Cited Reference Searching now in ProQuest Databases! post for guidance. Ask a Librarian if you have questions!

(For those of you unfamiliar with the search techniques of bibliography mining and cited reference searching refer to this Guide.)

The following ProQuest databases now include this feature:

  • ABI/INFORM Global
  • Psychology Journals
  • ProQuest Education Journals
  • ProQuest Medical Library
  • Dissertations & Theses Full Text

“Cited reference searching and bibliography mining are advanced research techniques that help you look both backwards and forwards in time to discover how an individual article or book relates to the development of a discipline. It can help you trace ideas back to their source, discover seminal works, complete a literature review, watch concepts mature over time, and analyze the importance of a single article in a discipline.” (Definition from the Bibliography Mining and Cited Reference Searching guide.)

Keep in mind that like other databases that include convenient bibliography mining and cited reference searching links, ProQuest only has links to articles and dissertations that are indexed in the ProQuest databases.

Below is a screen shot showing how the links appear in your results. Be sure to sort your results by Relevance instead of Date, as the more recently published articles are less likely to have been cited by anyone. Writing, research, and waiting for publication takes time!

Have you been using the Library and feel proficent,  but will be beginning your comprehensive exams or dissertation and would like to bring your library skills to the “next level”?

If you are attending the Anaheim Colloquium, beginning next week, consider attending one the Capella Library’s sessions:

Finding Scholarly Articles and Books is a great overview of the Library for those with maybe a “tinge” of Library Anxiety.

Advanced Searching and Finding Dissertations for those who have been using the Library and want to learn advanced searching techniques and learn about some resources for their comprehensive exams and disseration.

You can also set up a 20 minute one-on-one appointment with a Capella Librarian to perhaps start getting some ideas for resources for your disseration, or any other area where you would like some individual help.

We are in the Green Room (that sounds so “Hollywood”) at the Hilton, so sign up early if you are interested the appointments go fast!

If you are not attending Colloquium you can always call or email us for assistance, we always take as much time as is needed to address your question.

Will you be in sunny Anaheim over the Holidays?  Is one of your goals for this Colloquium to get more library “savvy”? Well let me make some suggestions.  

If you are Track 1 Learner and this is your first Colloquium attending the Capella University Library’s session “Finding Scholarly Articles & Books” is a good bet. This session will go over the basics of our online library and techniques will be demonstrated to help you use it effectively and efficiently. If you have a personal laptop bring it and you can follow along. 

If you are a Track 2 or 3 Learner check out “Advanced Searching and Finding Dissertations” . This session provides some great tips for bringing your library skills to the ”next level” and for getting ready for your comprehensive exam and dissertation research.

Do you want to learn about Web 2.0 technologies such as RSS, Social Bookmarking, Blogs and Podcasts? Check out the session “Enhancing Research Skills with New Technologies”.

If you can’t make these sessions (or even if you can)  you can schedule a 20 minute one-on-one appointment with a librarian for a overview of library services, or help with a research question or any other questions you may have about the Library.
