A new Google Labs experiment called Google Fast Flip wants to help people read news online in a faster format. From the Google Blog Post regarding this new “experiment” it talks about how long it takes to read the news on the web as you wait for each page to load for a news article. What Fast Flip is trying to do is make reading the news online similar to reading the news in print, finding a way to “flip” pages quickly just as you would a newspaper or magazine page with your finger, instead you’re flipping from one article to another. If you want to read the complete article you need to click on the page for it to open on the news website.

There are 4 categories for viewing:

Popularity (Most Viewed, Recommended, & Headlines)

Sections (Politics, Business, U.S., World, Sports, Sci/Tech, Entertainment, Health, Opinion, & Travel)

Topics (Randomized, changes each time you refresh the page, e.g. Argentina, Stock Market, etc.)

Sources (Randomized, changes each time you refresh the page, e.g. BBC News, NY Times, Salon, Newsweek, The Atlantic, etc.)

It’s an interesting idea and could be useful if you want to get the headlines on a particular topic or subject, and it does allow you to move through content pretty fast. However it’s currently somewhat limited, but experiments in Google Labs are often changing as they receive feedback and try to improve the product. The Topics & Sources links change every time you refresh the web page. You might have fun clicking on one of the random topics and viewing the news stories related to that topic, but if you wanted to focus on a specific topic then you’re probably better off either clicking on one of the Sections links, which has sections like you’d find in a regular newspaper (see bullet point above).

There is also a mobile option, for those of you with fancy mobile devices that connect to the Internet. iPhone and Android devices can access Mobile Google Fast Flip by pointing their browsers to http://fastflip.googlelabs.com/mobile.

Check it out at http://fastflip.googlelabs.com/.

CQ Researcher publishes 44 unbiased, heavily researched reports each year on timely and often controversial issues relating to health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy. Reports are written by “seasoned” journalists and include a link to the author’s brief biography.

Gale Virtual Reference Library now features streaming and downloadable audio of their encyclopedia entries. You can click to play the entry or download the MP3. Just click the Listen button and the options to either stream the audio or download the MP3 will appear.

Gale Virtual Reference Library is not a peer-reviewed journal resource, but it does include subject specific encyclopedias that are very helpful for finding out background information. Theories and research methodologies discussed in the scholarly literature do not go over the basic information about the theory or describes how a particular type of methodology is used. Scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles discuss the theory and methodology within the context of their research. The scholars assume the readers already have that foundational knowledge. So Gale is a great place to go to learn that foundational information. And now it’s available with an audio feature!

To learn more about Gale check out Robin’s recent blog post Gale to the Rescue.

Great news! You can now export Ebrary ebooks to your RefWorks account. If you haven’t already heard us rave about RefWorks, then be sure to check out our blog posts about RefWorks.

Below are the instructions for first enabling RefWorks function in ebrary, followed by the export directions for a single ebook or for exporting your entire Ebrary Bookshelf. I found these directions by clicking on Help in the Ebrary database. (Directions modified somewhat.)

Enabling EndNote or RefWorks

You must enable integration with EndNote or RefWorks before ebrary displays the buttons that support the feature. (You only have to do this one time and then you’ll be able to export every time you use ebrary.)

Click My Settings, located to the right of the language choice drop-down menu.

In the Managing Bibliographic Information area, click the Show EndNote buttons check box, the Show Refworks buttons check box, or both.

By default, no buttons are displayed.

The next time you perform a search, go to your bookshelf, or use the InfoTools drop-down menu while viewing a book, you can export the citation information.

Saving Bibliographical Information With RefWorks

RefWorks is an online research management, writing, and collaboration tool that you use over the Internet. Before you can save bibliographic data using RefWorks, you must create an account with RefWorks.

To save bibliographic data for a single document:

You have these choices:

Click the RefWorks button below the document on the search results page.

Open the document in the ebrary QuickView Reader and choose InfoTools > RefWorks.

RefWorks imports bibliographic information about the document. If you are not logged in to RefWorks, RefWorks prompts you to log in first.

Note: The prompt from RefWorks might be displayed in a different tab or browser window.

To save bibliographic data for all documents in a bookshelf folder:

Sign in to ebrary. Select the Bookshelf tab. You must be signed in to view your bookshelf.

Select a folder you have created. You can only save bibliographic information for documents in your folders.

Click the RefWorks button.

RefWorks imports bibliographic information for each document in the folder. If you are not logged in to RefWorks, RefWorks prompts you to log in first.

Many of you are fans of the Capella Library guide Bibliography Mining and Cited Reference Searching and may have seen my recent blog post titled Cited Reference Searching now in ProQuest Databases! Well cited reference searching is now a feature in the Science Direct – Social and Behavioral Sciences database (located on the Articles, Books and More page along with all the other Library databases).

Science Direct’s cited reference searching works somewhat differently than the other databases, as the “cited by” link is not on the results list but rather a button on the article information page (not the PDF).

So for example when you’re looking at a list of results in Science Direct you would click on the linked Article Title. When you’ve clicked the article title you’ll view a page similar to the below mini screen shot. The Cited By link is to the right of the article title on this page (highlighted in yellow):

Upon clicking on the Cited By link you’ll view the articles in the Science Direct database that cited the original article you were viewing.

We will update the Bibliography Mining & Cited Reference Searching guide to include ProQuest and Science Direct as soon as possible. But for now refer to this blog post and the Cited Reference Searching now in ProQuest Databases! post for guidance. Ask a Librarian if you have questions!

For those of you who have discovered the value of cited reference searching, you can now rejoice in knowing this feature is now available in ProQuest databases. (For those of you unfamiliar with the search techniques of bibliography mining and cited reference searching refer to this Guide.)

The following ProQuest databases now include this feature:

ABI/INFORM Global

Psychology Journals

ProQuest Education Journals

ProQuest Medical Library

Dissertations & Theses Full Text

“Cited reference searching and bibliography mining are advanced research techniques that help you look both backwards and forwards in time to discover how an individual article or book relates to the development of a discipline. It can help you trace ideas back to their source, discover seminal works, complete a literature review, watch concepts mature over time, and analyze the importance of a single article in a discipline.” (Definition from the Bibliography Mining and Cited Reference Searching guide.)

Keep in mind that like other databases that include convenient bibliography mining and cited reference searching links, ProQuest only has links to articles and dissertations that are indexed in the ProQuest databases.

Below is a screen shot showing how the links appear in your results. Be sure to sort your results by Relevance instead of Date, as the more recently published articles are less likely to have been cited by anyone. Writing, research, and waiting for publication takes time!

Quick reminder: Reference services will be closed from 12/24/08 through 1/4/2009. Of course all of the Capella Library databases, guides, and other resources will remain online and available for you to use as you need, but the Librarians will be unavailable by phone and email. Try our Guides & Tutorials for quick help with frequently asked questions and research tips.

If you’re having trouble navigating the redesigned Library website, take a look at Erika’s blog post from 12/9 with some navigation tips. All of the library databases, including Dissertations & Theses Full Text & the ebook databases (ebrary, NetLibrary, etc.) can be found by clicking on the link Articles, Books and More.

If you’ve got New Year’s Resolutions on your mind and are wondering what you could resolve to help you become more successful in your coursework in 2009, try resolving to keep your resources organized with a shiny new RefWorks account. RefWorks will also help you generate Reference Lists in APA format (just be sure to edit it with your human eye, as computer generated ref lists can have errors). Check out the RefWorks Blog Posts we’ve written since we added it in August this year.

Here’s to an organized and efficient 2009!
