The librarians often get calls about course readings that never open and RefWorks exports that never work. Sometimes this is due to a real technical problem, but very often they are due to a very simple issue:

Hidden pop-up windows

Course readings open in a new window, which usually pops up right in front of the window showing your Courseroom. That makes reading the first article very convenient. But the second you switch to something else on your computer, that pop-up window gets buried. And when you open the next reading, it may not pop up in front. Instead it opens in that hidden window.

RefWorks can result in similar hidden windows. If you are going back and forth between a database search and a RefWorks export, you may find that the RefWorks window doesn’t show up the second time you try to export. Also, if you are exporting from different databases, you could end up with several different RefWorks windows. This won’t hurt your RefWorks data, but it does mean you’ll have to search for the one that just got your export information.

So, how do you deal with hidden pop-up windows? Here are three easy options:

Always close the pop up when you’re done with it. That forces a new pop-up window next time, which should appear on top of everything else.

Minimize your windows until you find the window you need.

Look for your pop-up window listed in your computer’s taskbar. It may have a confusing title.

Many of you have noticed changes to the ebrary database. Last week ebrary changed not only how the database looks, but also what you need to do to read a book.

To search for a book, choose the search option at the top of the page. From the results page you can view the entire book by clicking the title or see just the table of contents.

You no longer need to download the ebrary Reader to see the content of a book. All books will come up under Quick View, but you will need to use the ebrary Reader if you want to print, highlight, or save a book to your bookshelf.

The link to the ebrary Reader is just above the Quick View’s image of the book.

If you’re a frequent EBSCOhost user (Academic Search Premier, PsycINFO, etc) you’ve probably already heard the news. On Wednesday morning, EBSCO finally rolled out the new interface they are calling EBSCOhost 2.0. They say the change “will provide you with the most powerful, clean and intuitive interface available.”

Rest assured that a search in the new interface should work the same as a search the old way. Things are just rearranged, “cleaned up” and hopefully enhanced.

Here’s a quick look at what you will find:

We have definitely run across some…idiosyncrasies. I have a few questions outstanding with the vendor, so I guess it’s still a work in progress. I have also experienced delays and errors on a fairly frequent basis, so please be patient if working on a search. As soon as the kinks are worked out, we’ll update our many guides and other materials to reflect this new interface.

Stay tuned and try to stay with us as we roll with this rollout.

You probably received an email this week announcing the new citation management tool available from the Library (RefWorks). Depending on what browser you use and your security settings, you may find the following security certificate (see picture below) when you try to access RefWorks. While the message sounds scary, this actually doesn’t pose a threat and you’ll just need to click on the link to Continue to this website.

Check out Emily’s blog post about RefWorks from 6/19 to learn more about how it can help you organize and manage all of your citations. A major advantage to using RefWorks is that it is Web-based. Unlike other programs that you install on your computer, you can access and use RefWorks from any computer with an Internet connection. Anyone who has used EndNote in the past can transfer EndNote citations from that program to their new RefWorks account to take advantage of this new resource.

For more information about creating your own RefWorks account and how to use RefWorks, check out the RefWorks Information Page (linked from the Databases A-Z page), or Ask a Librarian!

We’ve recently made a minor modification to several ProQuest databases (ABI/INFORM, ProQuest Education Journals, ProQuest Medical Library, and Psychology Journals).

In the past when you did a search, these databases limited your keywords to be found in the citation and abstract of the article. Now they will default to search your keywords in the citation and document text. This change means you will get more results when you do a search because it’s bringing back results that include your keywords anywhere in the article.

If you find that most of the first several results are not on your topic, you can change how the results are sorted to sort by relevance. This will bring the more relevant articles to the top of your results list.

You always have the choice to change where your keywords are searched. Just click on the drop down menu to the right of the search boxes to search your keywords in a different field.
