Fit—An Interdisciplinary Angle on Human Capital Management

Fit—it’s about more than your relationship with your jeans. People looking at fit are studying at least six different forms of fit: Person–Organization (PO) fit, Person–Job (PJ) fit, Person–People (PP) fit, Person–Group (PG) fit, Person–Supervisor (PS) fit, and Person–Vocation (PV) fit.

With fit as the intersection between the person at work and other factors, we have a new vantage point for studying a full range of human capital management issues. How do we recruit new employees who will fit the job, work group, and the organization? How do we develop the organization to better fit the types of workers we want to attract and retain? How do we motivate people and increase their job satisfaction so we keep the best? What training and development for supervisors will help increase their fit with employee needs; what training and development for employees will support their evolving fit with their vocation? Read an introduction “What is this thing called fit?”

Respected and emerging scholars interested in these questions will be meeting online to discuss “New Directions for Fit and Misfit” in a free conference November 19-21. This is a particularly good opportunity for graduate learners since there will be a special area for discussions about research and dissertations. Information and registration is online.

The Global Conference on Fit is hosted by the Open University Business School, based in the UK. The Chair, Jon Billsberry, directs the Fit Project. Learn more and download free articles.
