Hi, Nancy; thanks for the article and resources. Another key resource for organizations and executive coaches is my friend and colleague, Laura Crawshaw, Ph.D. (crawshaw@executiveinsight.com), also known as “The Boss Whisperer,”™ whose research and professional practice focus on coaching abrasive managers to successfully move away from abrasive workplace behaviors. Over the past 15 years of coaching and researching abrasive executives, Dr. Crawshaw has explored the psychodynamics of defensiveness, and her findings serve as the foundation for her efforts to end workplace bullying. Derived from evolutionary biology, psychoanalytic, and empathy theories, she has developed an approach to so-called bullying that will prove especially helpful to those engaged in organizational development, management, consulting, coaching, and any other activity that involves encounters with otherwise intractable abrasive managers.
Dr. Crawshaw is the author of Taming the Abrasive Manager: How to End Unnecessary Roughness in the Workplace (Jossey-Bass Management Series, 2007), founder of The Boss Whispering Institute, dedicated to research and training in the field of coaching abrasive executives, and owner of Executive Insight Development Group, Inc. (http://www.executiveinsight.com). Her website features her book and a video interview that provides more information on her approach to workplace bullying; unlike most others’ approaches that focus only on coping with workplace bullying, Dr. Crawshaw’s coaching method moves beyond coping with such problematic employees to successfully working directly with them toward more manageable behaviors and interaction.
She is a member and featured speaker of, among other groups, the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations, American Psychological Association, International Association on Bullying and Harassment at Work, Society for Human Resource Management, and International Coach Federation. I thought you’d like to be aware of her approach, services, and training offerings for other coaches, consultants, and HR professionals. I’m sure she’d welcome any inquiries.

The abusive manager is also the topic of a Harvard Business Publishing article and discussion: “The Boss Who Yells.” It is online at http://makeyourcase.harvardbusiness.org/2009/01/the-boss-who-yells.html.

In my recently released book titled “In Darkness Light Dawns: Exposing Workplace Bullying” I examine this topic in great detail. It is so important for leaders, managers, and employees to understand the impact bullying can have on targeted individuals and their families. My book includes the research I conducted on workplace bullying. This is an issue that can no longer be ignored as it is slowly destroying millions of lives daily. “In Darkness Light Dawns: Exposing Workplace Bullying” is available at http://www.amazon.com/Darkness-Light-Dawns-Exposing-Workplace/dp/0615311423 or http://www.bulliednomore.com or http://www.bookmasters.com/marktplc/02784.htm
