What’s Your Perspective?

Welcome to Organizational Perspectives, a home for cross-disciplinary dialogue about human capital management.

Improving an organization’s performance can be approached from a business, psychology, or education discipline.

A motivated, team-oriented, and creative workforce is a result of professionals from these three disciplines working together. Human resource professionals bring talent into organizations through hiring and promotion, training and performance improvement professionals develop talent to meet organizational needs, and organizational psychologists look at the effects that social and workplace contexts have on individuals and groups.

HR, Privacy, and Social Networks

HR staff, recruiters and employers are using the Internet and new media in new ways.

A National Public Radio report points to some potential perils for job seekers who are inattentive to the digital identity they convey. One good resource for those concerned about how online messages may be interpreted by potential employers is: The Future of Reputation free e-book by Daniel J. Solove, professor of law at the George Washington University Law School and digital privacy expert.

If you would like to explore  interactions between HRM and social networks, you can join the discussion on the HRM the Journal community (free registration required.) A related webinar about using technology in on-boarding will be offered free at the Human Capital Institute.

Untangling Intellectual Property Law for the Digital Age

68160_coverWhen it comes to issues related to intellectual property, nothing has changed, but everything has changed. The Copyright Act was last updated with the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA). Aside from a few revisions, the circa 1790 principles protecting the rights of those who create content are largely unchanged. But everything has changed in the digital culture, where individuals can create, distribute, download, adapt, and/or use information and creative work.

Defining “Human Capital”

Much of the content on this site is dedicated to the discussion of Human Capital and all that those words encompass. As a HR professional, the discussion of “Human Capital” is common. But, in a discussion with a C-level executive the other day, I realized that there are many business people out there who are not well-versed on Human Capital and what it should mean to them. In further discussion with other professionals, I found out that even those who understand the importance of Human Capital may have a different definition, or their expected outcome of this area of focus may be different.

How do you explain the term “Human Capital”and what it should mean to executives?

Finances, Markets and the Workplace

With the fall of the Dow Jones yesterday there is a lot of financial uncertainty out there. Many consumers may have originally thought that the economic crisis was strictly surrounding the mortgage industry and are now feeling nervous that there may be much bigger issues on the horizon that will, in some way, impact everyone. As HR professionals, our people often look to us for answers to questions on job security, retirement plans, and other benefits and how the current economic turmoil could negatively impact them. What further can we do to assist people in this tough time?
